If You Are Looking at a Phantom VII 

The Phantom VII (chassis code RR1 sedan, RR2 EWB) launched the modern Rolls-Royce era and ran in production for fourteen years. It is a more analog-feeling Phantom than the VIII: the naturally aspirated V12 has its own character, the steering feel is hydraulic-assisted, and the cabin technology is reflective of its era. Many enthusiasts and Rolls-Royce specialists prefer the VII for exactly these reasons. 

  • Series I (2003–2012). Original car. Sedan and Extended Wheelbase configurations. Naturally aspirated V12 with progressive power delivery. 
  • Series II (2012–2017). Updated headlights with LED daytime running lights, redesigned bumpers, an 8-speed transmission, and modernized infotainment. The Series II addresses many of the technology criticisms of the Series I while keeping the Phantom’s mechanical character intact. 
  • Coupé and Drophead. Production ended in 2016 with 50 “Zenith” Coupe and Drophead final-edition examples. These body styles are not part of the Phantom VIII lineup and trade as collector cars.

If You Are Looking at a Phantom VIII 

The Phantom VIII represents the modern interpretation of the model. The aluminum Architecture of Luxury platform is shared with the Cullinan SUV and the Spectre coupe, and the cabin technology is generations ahead of the VII. A few specific items worth knowing: 

  • Twin-turbocharged V12. The N74B68 6.75L produces 563 horsepower and 664 lb-ft. Power delivery is more immediate than the VII’s naturally aspirated engine, with the Phantom’s usual hallmark of complete silence under acceleration. 
  • Flagbearer suspension and 4-wheel steering. A stereo camera scans the road ahead at speeds up to roughly 62 mph and preconditions the suspension and active anti-roll bars for upcoming road imperfections. Four-wheel steering reduces the car’s turning circle meaningfully despite the long wheelbase. 
  • The Gallery. A dashboard-spanning glass panel behind which owners can commission unique artworks, ranging from silk weaves to porcelain sculptures to original commissioned paintings. Most VIII owners commissioned a Gallery; some chose simpler designs. 
  • The Embrace. Coach doors close automatically with a button press from inside, addressing the practical reality that closing a heavy rear-hinged coach door from the inside is awkward.

Bespoke specification 

Most Phantoms are commissioned with bespoke elements through Rolls-Royce’s Bespoke Collective at Goodwood. Common bespoke elements include custom paint colors mixed to specific references, embroidered headrests or door panels, marquetry inlays, custom Starlight Headliner constellations, and matched luggage sets. The pre-owned market value of a Phantom is influenced by the quality and consistency of its original commission. A thoughtfully specified Phantom in popular colors trades better than the same car in unusual or polarizing combinations. 

Provenance 

Phantoms are not anonymous cars. Many examples have documented histories, including known prior ownership, public-facing use, and notable events. Frequently Asked Questions 

Should I buy a Phantom VII or a Phantom VIII? 

Different cars for different priorities. The Phantom VII is more analog, less complex electronically, and trades at lower price points for a comparable build year. The Phantom VIII offers contemporary technology, the twin-turbo V12’s more immediate power delivery, four-wheel steering, and the Architecture of Luxury platform. If you intend to use the car frequently, the VIII is the more livable choice. If you want a more analog-feeling Rolls-Royce experience or are building a small collection that includes an earlier-era Phantom, the VII makes more sense. 

Is the Phantom appropriate for owner-driven use? 

It can be, but it is not what the car was designed for. Rolls-Royce engineers the Phantom around the rear-seat experience. Owners who plan to drive themselves to most appointments are typically better served by a Ghost, which is purpose-built for the owner-driven role. We will not push you toward a Phantom if your use case is genuinely owner-driven. We have sold plenty of Phantoms to clients who knew exactly what they wanted, and we have redirected plenty of clients to Ghost when that was the better fit. 

How much does it cost to maintain a pre-owned Phantom? 

Annual service through an authorized Rolls-Royce facility, plus consumables (tires, brakes, fluids), runs higher than a Mercedes S-Class but is reasonable relative to the asset. Major service items (air suspension components, V12 cooling system overhauls if needed) can be substantial. Buyers who plan to keep a Phantom long-term should budget for proactive maintenance rather than reactive repair. We provide a written maintenance estimate on any Phantom we list. 

Can I commission additional bespoke elements on a pre-owned Phantom? 

Some elements yes, others no. Paint, marquetry, leather, and Starlight Headliner modifications can be added or modified through Rolls-Royce specialists or authorized refurbishment programs. Major structural bespoke work (Gallery commissioning, embedded artistry) is generally factory-only and limited to original commission. We can advise what is realistic to add to a specific car based on its build sheet and condition. 

Will my Phantom hold its value? 

Honest answer: depends on the specific car and the broader market. We do not forecast values. Phantom VII and VIII pricing has been more stable than many luxury sedans because of low production, hand-assembly, and limited remarketing volume, but specific colors, commissions, and provenances trade differently. Buy the Phantom because you want the car. Treat any value retention as a bonus, not the thesis. 

Do you offer extended service contracts on pre-owned Phantoms? 

Yes, through reputable providers experienced with Rolls-Royce. Coverage terms vary by vehicle age, mileage, and prior service history. We will tell you when an extended service contract makes financial sense and when self-insurance is the better path for the specific Phantom you are considering. We do not push contracts that do not actually serve the buyer. 

Can a third-party Rolls-Royce specialist inspect the car before purchase? 

Yes, and we encourage it. Any reputable dealer should welcome an independent pre-purchase inspection at a Rolls-Royce specialist of your choice. We will hold the vehicle, coordinate the appointment, and cover the drive to and from a local inspection facility within a reasonable distance of Ridgefield. 

Is enclosed transport available for out-of-state delivery?

Insufficient Funds

If a person writes a check without sufficient funds in an associated account to cover it, the check will bounce, or be returned for insufficient funds. Each state has laws regulating how merchants may respond to bounced checks. In Connecticut, the merchant may file a civil suit and press criminal charges if the check writer does not reimburse him for a bounced check after the merchant has sent several notices regarding the matter.

Posted Notice Requirement

Merchants and other business owners who accept checks must post a notice where customers are likely to see it warning them of the potential consequences of writing bad checks. The notice must include the civil penalties that bad check writers may face, the appropriate Connecticut statute number and an advisory that the check writer may also face criminal penalties

Civil and Criminal Penalties

As of 2010, civil courts may require the check writer to reimburse the merchant for the value of the check plus pay up to $750 if he has no back account or $400 if the check is returned for insufficient funds. If the merchant chooses to press criminal charges, the bad check writer may face a fine of up to $1,000 and up to one year in jail. Writing a bad check is a felony charge if the check was for more than $1,000 and a misdemeanor if written for a lesser amount.

Required Written Notices

If a check bounces, the merchant must send the check writer a letter by certified mail at the check writer's last known address or place of business. Usually this letter is sent to the address on the writer's check. The letter must inform the writer that the check was returned ask him to reimburse the merchant for the amount of the check and inform him of the potential criminal or civil penalties if he fails to do so. If the check writers does not respond to the letter within 15 days of receipt, the merchant must send a second letter. This letter must inform the check writer that he has 30 days to reimburse the merchant before the merchant takes legal action against him. Both letters must be written in both English and Spanish.
